Sudden Occasional Driver Premium
by Mark
(Ontario)
All of a sudden I have an occasional driver premium in more than one place on my Fall 2010 Ontario car insurance renewal, and since I don't have a child of age yet, I am assuming it is for my wife who rarely drives my car (who has her own car and own insurance, although her spring 2010 policy remained without the charge that I just received). I have never been charged this before receiving this year's policy renewal. All occasional driver boxes have always been blank. Is this a mistake or a new charge?
Extra charge for Occasional Driver
Hi Mark,
It is hard to say for sure if this is a mistake or not. Your insurer might have checked your driving record for tickets and the like and found that your wife has a drivers license. They might have added her to your policy based on this.
You should give your auto insurance company a call and ask. Let them know that your wife is insured elsewhere and be prepared to give the policy number. They might be willing to remove her as an occasional at that point. But realistically, your wife should be on your policy because she probably drives your car on occasion.
Thanks for asking! By the way, are your rates too high? Check here:
