Maximum Ontario Auto Insurance Rate Increase

by Belair Direct customer
(Ontario, Canada)

What is the maximum increase for auto insurance in Ontario for 2010 ?
Belair direct wants to charge me 28% more this year.
No change in policy - no accidents or tickets.

Maximum Rate Increase Answer

Many insurers raised rates in 2009 and in the start of 2010. Belair raised rates three quarters in a row for an average rate increase of 10.84%:

  • 5.10% rate increase approved in the fourth quarter of 2009

  • 3.17% rate increase in the first quarter of 2010

  • 2.57% rate decrease in the second quarter of 2010

An average increase does not mean everyone's rates increase the same. Some clients may have had a decrease. But it would seem that most had an increase of some sort. Your rate going up so much more than average indicates that you are not Belair Direct's target client.
