loaning my car to my son

by Jamie
(Sudbury, Ontario, Canada)

I live in Ontario, Canada. My son lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. I am driving my car out to Vancouver and lending the automobile to my son. I will still be paying the insurance on the car and it is still registered in Ontario. Can I do this?

Lending Car to Son In BC

Hi Jamie
This is a case that you really should discuss with your insurance company.

That said, your policy is in force when you leave the province (although some coverages change - ie liability). And your policy allows you to lend your car to anyone who is "authorized by law" to drive.

Keep in mind that if you lend your car, you are responsible for any accidents/claims.

This is one that you should discuss with your insurer as there are several details.

By the way, are your rates too high? Check here:

depends how long you are staying and how long the car is there for. if its just a vist 1-3 weeks, then you are fine, as long as he has a license that is valid.
