I want to buy a car for use by my sister
by Dave
(Toronto)
I do not want to be insured for this car as I have my own car. We do not live at the same address. The car must be in my name for financial reasons but the only insurance required is for my sister.
Can this be done in Ontario?
Car Insurance for Sister
Hi Dave,
The registered owner of the vehicle must be the owner of the insurance policy. The insurance will be rated (priced) on your sisters information (ie her driving experience, vehicle use, etc). And she can be the payor. You can even take out a different policy from the one you have for your own vehicles.
The big problem for you is if she has a claim. It will very likely impact your insurance rates as you are responsible for who drives your vehicles.
Hope that helps.
