Home policy canceled due to owing dogs

by Clover
(Halifax NS)

We called our insurer today to update details - we have multiple policies from the same insurer held for 20+ years without a single issue (1 claim for hurricane damage). As part of the update they asked if we owned a dog and we said yes, we own four dogs (Australian shepherds). We have had multiple dogs for 16 years with never an issue. The insurer never asked for this information before and their website does not state that owning a dog(s) is an exclusion for under-writing a policy. Without any consultation we were informed that our policy is now canceled due to owning dogs and we have 15 days to find a new carrier. How can they cancel without cause?

Home Insurance Cancelled Due to Dogs

Hi Clover
That's a pretty ridiculous reason to cancel (I love Aussies by the way).

However ridiculous it is, if they have dogs as a part of their "risk selection", they can cancel. Sounds like you are better off elsewhere and found a new carrier with a lot more common sense and appreciation of a good client like yourself.
