Home Insurance Claims

by Jane
(Collingwood, Ontario)

Last year someone broke into my car and I put a claim in on my house insurance policy. Now I have had shingles blow off my roof and I want to put a claim in. Someone told me that the insurance company might cancel my policy if I put this claim in.

Is that true?

Home Insurance Claim Answer

This depends on the insurer. Many insurers will not renew a policy after a certain number of claims. With Ontario home insurance companies, my experience is after a third claim in a three year period.

But that doesn't mean that there are not company's that would not renew after a second claim. Have you tried an anonymous, hypothetical call to your insurance company? Or, if you have a broker, the broker should be able to give you advice about this.

One more thought: If the roof is fairly old and was due for re-shingling, it is possible that your insurer will decline the claim because it was a maintenance issue as opposed to an unpredictable event.

Hopefully this helps a little!
