Drunk Driving and Insurance

by J.A.
(Ontario)

What is the effect of drunk driving on Ontario car insurance? I was caught at a roadside checkpoint and blew .09. Will my rates go up? And how much will my rates go up if they do? Will this happen right away? Do I have to tell my insurer?

ANSWER Hi J.A.

I think you already have an idea that this will be treated quite seriously by your insurance company. You didn't say where you are insured but I can say with confidence that you will probably not be offered coverage after your policy renews.

When it comes time to get new coverage, just about every Ontario insurance company will not accept your business. Only the high risk and "mid market" insurers will be willing to take your business, and at a high premium.

Hopefully for you this is your only blemish on your record. Each additional ticket, however minor, and each claim will serve to push your rates higher.
