If a car is not registered in my name, can I still get insurance on it under my name?
Insuring a Car Not in Your Name
You are supposed to have an insurable interest in the car. So if you don't own it, most insurers will not give you coverage. You'll likely have to get the car in your name to insure it.
Or, the current owner can list you as the primary driver if that is the case.
