Car accident without insurance

My friend drove my car without my knowledge knowing that it is no longer insured and got into an accident. Now the other party is asking me to pay for the damages that I didn't even know. Why isn't your so called friend stepping up and paying for the damages? Have you pressed charges against this friend for stealing your car? And how did the friend get access to the car anyhow? The most logical solution appears to be that your friend take responsibility and pay for all damages.
