Car accident without insurance

by Bryan
(Toronto, Ontario, Canada)

My friend drove my car without my knowledge knowing that it is no longer insured and got into an accident. Now the other party is asking me to pay for the damages that I didn't even know. I was not there when the accident happened. Can I get out of this messy situation?

Messy Situation - Car Insurance in Ontario

Hi Bryan
This is a messy situation. Why isn't your so called friend stepping up and paying for the damages? Have you pressed charges against this friend for stealing your car? And how did the friend get access to the car anyhow?

The most logical solution appears to be that your friend take responsibility and pay for all damages.

Since there is no insurance involved, this is more of a legal question than an insurance question and it would be wise to get legal counsel.

Hope that helps
