Cancelled insurance for non payment

(Hamilton, ON)

My boyfriend, 20 years old, lives in Hamilton and just recently had his auto insurance cancelled for nonpayment. On top of that he's been in one at fault accident, and has a ticket for failure to show insurance card. It's been extremely difficult for him to find an insurance company that will take him.

He lives with his mother who currently doesn't have insurance after being canceled and has been in two accidents also.

He has a completely different car that she is not allowed to drive (his old insurance had her sign a paper) but now it seems her accidents are influencing his insurance. Which is unfair because he has his own car that he pays 100% for and is under his name.

We have tried every website we can think of, including kanetix and nothing is working.
Is there anywhere he can get insurance?

Cancelled Insurance For Non Payment

Hi Elizabeth,

This is a tough one. He's got a lot of "strikes" against him. And then you throw in his mom simply because she lives in the same house and it gets really ugly.

He will need to find a really caring and hard working insurance broker. And he will probably need to pay for the whole policy at once. There is a carrier with 3 month policies for higher risk drivers, that might help with the payment situation.

A broker might be able to negotiate having his mother sign an OPCF 28a to exclude her (sounds like this was on the last policy as well). If all else fails, he can always get coverage through the insurer of last resort: The Facility Association.

Please be sure to discuss this further with a licensed insurance representative.
