Can I insure a vehicle that is not in my name?

I will be receiving a relative's vehicle in November. We will transfer ownership as a Family Gift. The vehicle is not currently insured. I do not have automotive insurance as I do not have a vehicle. In order to transfer ownership, proof of valid insurance needs to be provided. Can I insure the vehicle even if it is still in my relative's name?
Insuring a Vehicle Received as a Gift
Hi Fiona,
While you can't insure a car that is not in your name, you can get what you to do done. No problem at all.
When you are ready to get the car, you need to get insurance quotes based on that vehicle and on your driving record. You can buy the policy on the day (or day before) you buy the car and get proof of insurance to bring with you to transfer the ownership. You'll just need to provide the vehicles VIN and the purchase price (free). It's that easy! The insurer will probably want a copy of the ownership once it is in your name as proof of ownership.
Hope that helps.
