Buying Life Insurance

by Will
(Ottawa, Ontario)

Can someone buy life insurance on me without my permission or without me knowing? Can I buy coverage on someone else?

Answer
Hi Will,
No, it is not possible to buy life insurance without the consent and knowledge of the person to be insured.

One exception to this is that a parent can buy a policy on a minor child without their knowledge and consent.

If you want to buy coverage on someone else they must consent to it. And, the life insurance company will want you to prove that there is an insurable interest. This means that there is a need for you to have life insurance on that person (usually because you depend on them financially).

Hope that helps,
