I cancelled my previous auto insurance in 2009-12 (policy was from maybe 1994 or before that). I have purchased another vehicle and tried to obtain insurance from another company but the autoplus report does not show the information from that particular policy (in fact a different insurance policy seems to show up). Apparently this is due to the former insurance company not reporting my insurance history properly. The company has started a process of retrieving my information but it will take 2-3 weeks.
I bought my new vehicle on the weekend (Saturday) and was supposed to pick it up today (Tuesday following).
My questions is: Is the company in violation of the Ontario Insurance Act by not having reported this and should I involve an Ombudsman, despite the fact this is going to be resolved?
I am in a situation where I either wait for 3 weeks to register my vehicle or I pay higher rates due to the lack of insurance records, not a pleasant place to be.
Regards, Ian
Ontario Insurance and AutoPlus not Updated
Hi Ian, Your frustration is understandable. I am not sure if the company is in violation of the Ontario Auto Insurance Act. I can't recall this being covered.
One final comment: I would think that your new insurer would offer to adjust your rates effective to the start date of your policy once they had the correct information. You should ask about this.
