Adding son to policy
by Sandra
(Ottawa, Ontario Canada)
My 32 yr old son is living with us for a while. My insurance company is saying that I have to add him to the policy because he has a driver's license. Will my insurance rate increase because he is a high risk driver because of some accidents? Why should I add him to my insurance if he's not going to drive my car? How about if he has his own insurance. They say if he does, he has to provide the name and policy # of his insurance. Why should he have to do that if he has his own. I shouldn't have to add that information to my policy.
Son Who Is "High Risk Driver"
Hi Sandra
This is a common practice. One alternative you can ask about is having your son excluded from your policy (which means that legally he can drive the car). Otherwise it will have an impact on your rates, unless he has his own coverage (and you share that information with your insurer).
Please be sure to discuss this further with a licensed insurance representative. Oh, and by the way, are your rates too high? Check here:
