20 yr old son lives with Dad and visits Mom

by Heidi
(sudbury, ontario, canada)

Hi
My 20 year old son currently lives with his Father and has obtained his G2. He is planning to stay with me, his Mom, to attend University then return to his Father's during the breaks. He does not have insurance as of yet -so two questions - should he be insured under his father's policy or mine? second question - if he is insured on his father's can he drive my car while going to university or if he insured under mine can he drive his father's car when he is there?
Thanks,
Heidi

Split Parents and Insurance

Hi Heidi
This is a tough one. Some insurers would want him listed on both policies. My personal opinion is that he should be listed on the fathers policy if that is his principle residence. Or maybe a compromise is that he is on your policy during the school year and on his fathers during summer breaks. But having him on both policies seems like an unnecessary expense.

It's likely best that you run this by your respective insurers.
