18 yr old son with a 50km over speeding ticket

A couple of questions about this. My son who is 18 received a speeding ticket for 50 k over. Can I wait to tell insurance company at renewal or should I tell them now. I did phone because he is going off to university and he won't be driving there. But I was planning to wait until the renewal to let them know about ticket.
I will probably have to remove him from policy all together due to cost, but I'm putting off the inevitable.
